In Azerbaijan, TrialWatch has monitored the trial of opposition figure and former journalist Tofig Yagublu.
Mr. Yagublu was convicted of ‘hooliganism with the use of weapons’ in September 2020. The case arose from a car accident in which Mr. Yagublu was allegedly involve. The prosecution asserted that Mr. Yagublu not only caused the accident but also attacked the other driver with a screwdriver. Mr. Yagublu – who has been subjected to persistent harassment by the Azerbaijani state and has been arrested on at least five occasions based on his involvement in protests opposing the government–has said that the car accident was a set up. Mr Yagublu was sentenced to four years and three months in prison. A Fairness Report is forthcoming.
