Waging Justice for Women Fellow
Tonthozo Saukila is serving her fellowship with the Women Lawyers Association (WLA) in Malawi. Her passion for women’s rights and access to justice has been a driving force throughout her academic and professional endeavors, and she is excited to nurture this passion through the fellowship.
Tonthozo holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Rhodes University in South Africa, and a Master of Laws (LLM) specializing in Human Rights Law from the University of Cape Town in South Africa. She is a strong believer in the power of community engagement to create sustainable developments in the advancement of women’s rights in countries such as Malawi. Her LLM thesis analyzed how South Africa can regulate Ukuthwala (bridal abduction) through community-led initiatives, similar to those used by some Malawian communities to address child marriage.
Tonthozo hopes to engage communities in the work of advancing human rights through strategic litigation and advocacy throughout the fellowship.
