Waging Justice for Women Fellow

Tamika Thumbiran is a South African lawyer who is serving her fellowship with The Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria. She is an admitted Advocate of the High Court of South Africa and member of the Johannesburg Society of Advocates. Before joining the Bar, Tamika was admitted to practice as an Attorney of the High Court. Her areas of expertise include international and domestic criminal law, domestic violence, and civil litigation. A dedicated advocate for the rights of women, children and impacted communities, Tamika received her LL.B. from the University of KwaZulu – Natal, Howard College Campus, in 2019 and has endeavored to incorporate a feminist perspective in her legal work. During her time as an attorney and advocate, she aspired to give a voice to survivors of abuse through her work in the domestic violence courts and by monitoring trials on behalf of survivors.  Tamika is also passionate about reforming labor legislation to better protect pregnant women in the workplace and has written an article on the topic, titled “What to Expect When You’re Expecting? Prejudice and Bias in the Workplace”.
