As previously reported, the American Bar Association’s Center for Human Rights intends to monitor the trial of Mr. Paul Rusesabagina in Rwanda as part of the Clooney Foundation for Justice’s TrialWatch initiative.
British barrister and former UN judge Geoffrey Robertson QC has been designated as the TrialWatch Expert who will assess the fairness of the trial and assign a grade to the trial in line with the international regional standards. Mr. Robertson has significant expertise in terrorism trials and previously served as President of the UN war crimes court for Sierra Leone.
Mr. Robertson said: “One of the hallmarks of a fair process is transparency. The Government of Rwanda has an obligation under the Conventions it has ratified to afford Mr. Rusesabagina a fair and public trial before an independent and impartial court and I look forward to assessing and reporting on whether this obligation has been met.”
