Preliminary Report Released on the Trial of Peruvian Journalist Paola Ugaz

Peruvian journalists Paola Ugaz and Pedro Salinas, who exposed a web of abuse in an elite Catholic society and are being sued for defamation by a local bishop, talk to Reuters during an interview in Lima, Peru October 16, 2018. REUTERS/Mariana Bazo

Peru should put a stop to the use of criminal defamation laws to try to suppress speech on topics of public interest. The court should dismiss the charges against Ms. Ugaz, in line with international and regional human rights standards, and she should be allowed to do her job without harassment.

Preliminary report here.
